When Your Outside Lines Don't Work
There is a perplexing dilemma when deciding where the problem lies and who to call to take care of it. It wouldn't be a problem if the phone company didn't charge for the trip only to say the problem is not on there end. So who do you call to save money?
There is a couple things to consider...
While they may not like it we have found that the majority of the problems, about 90%, are on the phone company side. While we have no problem coming out to locate the problem we do unfortunately charge for the service call regardless of where the problem is found.
What to look for in deciding who to call first. Common clues do exist to indicate who to involve;
Call the phone company if...
One line dead but all others are okay (unless it's a new install of the phone system).
Some lines have noise but others are okay.
Lines dead after a power surge.
Lines died during a lightning storm. (This may require both the phone company and us.)
All lines have noise.
When It Comes To Your Area
Ten digit dialing is becoming mandatory when dialing even your neighbors in many parts of the country. But the majority of our service area has not been affected by it yet. But there are a few things that would be good to know when that time does come.
First, getting into the practice with your cell phones.
Those of you who have programmed contacts and speed dials may at this time use the 10 digit plan now. While you can call by dialing just 7 digits there is an advantage to including the area code.
While traveling out of your service area you have to use the area code even though your phone number is from that same area. Ten digit dialing works from and to everywhere.
News of a new overlay area code.
Overlay area codes is a mingling of a new area code serving the same geographical area with an existing area code giving the prime reason why 10 digits are needed. This saves on having to issue new numbers to existing phone customers as was the practice with dividing of the land into smaller chunks.
When the new overlay is about to be implemented there is usually a time period when dialing with 7 or 10 digits are optional. This is when programming of speed dials should be changed to include area codes. Most business phone systems need programming adjustments done in the dialing plan. Without it the call will either fail to go through or there will be mix of dialing sounds heard.
